I'm not sure if this will be of much practical help to you unless you
happen to be in or come to Australia, but at page 28 of Part 4 of the
Australian Joint Copying Project Handbook (second edition) there is
the following entry:
Returns, South African War, local armed forces, nominal rolls
WO127 Reel 5882 Piece no. 16 Date 1901-1902 Description
Bushveldt CarbineersCarbineers
Nevertheless, the above may assist you to track down the original BVC
records at the PRO in London from which the AJCP copies were made.
Had your man been in the Australian Contingents to the Boer War you
could have found him and his comrades in Dr MacLachlan's index to P.
L. Murray: Official Records of the Australian Military Contingents to
the War in South Africa , which can be downloaded from
ftp://pcugbbs.pcug.org.au/gentext/boer_oz.zip.
If you are particularly interested in the BVC you may want to get it
anyway as R.L.Wallace says in his book, The Australians at the Boer
War, that 90% of the 320 strong BVC were Australians.
By using Dr MacLachlan's Index to identify the Australians in the PRO
BVC nominal roll you should be left with just the 10% who were Brits
or others.
Dr MacLachlan's index to Murray includes that other noted Englishman
turned bushman, L/Cpl later Lt. Harry Harboard Morant (aka Breaker) of
the 2nd South Australian Mounted Rifles, who subsequently went on to
serve in the BVC. Along with Lt. Peter Joseph Handcock of the BVC,
they were awarded by the British military authorities for their
efforts in that unit with something distinctly different from the DCM!
