The Girl's Industrial School in Hobart was established in 1852 to provide a
home for neglected children , in 1867 the Industrial Schools Act was
amended to enable children found begging, vagrant, in the company of
reputed thieves, orphaned, deserted or declared uncontrollable to be
admitted. The girls were trained in dosmestic duties and sent into service
with carefully chosen employers.
The records show reasons for admission and date thereof, date of discharge
and
employer. Joyce Purtscher has produced a booklet which includes these
details. Both the Archive Office of Tasmania and the Hobart Genealogy
Society (PO Box 640G, Hobart 7001) will have copies of Joyce's work.

Good Luck
