Subject: "ALFRED" South Australia 1848
Date: 30 Nov 1997 19:32:10 -0800
Hi Margaret, Faye & Others Interested in this Ship,
I have lists of the Passengers of the 1848 Voyage from Hamburg to South
Australia of the "ALFRED", in fact two different lists, on microfiche.
They are in the form of two letters handwritten in 1848 by the British
Authorities listing all of the Passengers.
They include:
Peter HITTMANN & wife - Agriculturist - From Saxony
and this is some of the text included in the letters:
From the first letter, there must have been some discrepancy over the
amount of passengers landed
"Two hundred and eighty souls are reported by the Master to have arrived
here.
By comparing the Masters report with this list it would appear that
three deaths have occured amongst the Adults and that the births have
exceeded the deaths amongst children by three.
Under the provisions of the 2nd Section of the
....(illegible)...Passengers.............a..... with the same extent of
Lower Deck .......... 3,750 superficial(?) feet, would have been allowed
to carry on this voyage 250 Statute Adults. Not knowing the number of
Children under 12 months ......... in the 280 I cannot state positively
that they amount to more than 250 Statute Adults. Respectfully
submitting, ................, Collector
List of Passengers per "ALFRED" from Hamburg August 15"
(I will do free lookups for people but I don't have the time to re-type
the list at this stage, may do so at a later date.)
The second letter:
The list of passengers is first followed by the following
"The party from Silesia, forming the first page, is desirous of becoming
tenants of the South Australian Company having sufficient means to
purchase livestock and to pay for temporary buildings to commence
farming. They wish, however, to pay for the land by instalments in
fruits of the field. The party from Saxony on the next pages is
similarly circumstanced, and both can be recommended by me as most
respectable persons and most especially their leaders, (looks like)
MICKERT from Liegnitz and (looks like) DEUTSCHER from Saxony.
Signed Edward D."
The voyage is listed as 48/2 on the records.
I hope this enlightens anyone with queries about the voyage of the
"ALFRED" in 1848 to South Australia from Hamburg.
Regards,
Coralie Beer, Whyalla, South Australia
