Hamish,

National Archives, Wellington, has registers of service in the Armed
Constabulary 1867-86. These give personal details. Microfilms of these
registers are available at the Auckland Museum Library (Reels 97 and 98).

There is a nominal return of officers in the Armed Constabulary in July
1872 in the Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives.

Brief details of this force, which had a dual military-police role, and was
comprised of nine divisions with between 60 and 80 constables in each, can
be found in James' Belich "The New Zealand Wars" and in other books. I know
of no single book on the Armed Constabulary.
