Cheri,
I don't have this need, but just to check, I created an event template, which I called Partner. I modeled it after the marriage event:
Tag: Partner
Secondary: Spouse link
Name: Partner
Class: Family start
Secondary label: blank
Template: [P] did whatever partners do with [S} [D+L]
This seems to work as an alternative to marriage. The key is to make it a family event, which allows you to identify the second individual.
