Thanks for the thought Murray, unfortunately I've done just that, so if I
click on the .png file it opens in IrfanView as you would expect. However
when I click on the hyperlink in excel it still opens in IE. The display is
not very good and I have none of the graphic viewer options.

I notice if I right click on a .png file, IE is listed as one of the
recommended program to open the file, which is not the case with say a .tif
file. Point being I do not have this problem in excel with .tif files, the
hyperlink opens the file in IrfanView as you would expect.

Have you up dated IrfanView to v. 3.85?
