Denise - What is the best virtual memory setting and how does one go about
setting that? Lately I seem to be experience the freeze ups that Bob
mentions and I do both GenBox and 'puter maintenance religiously.

Good Day Bob,

Both Genbox (a database application) and computers require consistent
preventive maintenance, similar to changing the oil and filter in your car
or rotating tires. Do you perform the basic maintenance for the database and
the hard drive of your computer?

As an example, when I have time to work with Genbox I always end with the
following sequence of "maintenance" to my Genbox database:
* Run File > Check Field Codes.
* Run File > Check Links.
* Run File > Repair/Compact Database for Check Structure and Compact.
* Run File > Backup to an external hard drive.

Beyond Genbox, I use Disk Cleanup and defragmentation weekly to maintain my
computer's hard drives.

Also, what RAM does your computer have? Running Windows, plus other
applications can use up RAM. Typically computer manufactures send out
machines without the best Virtual memory setting. You might want to check
that setting on your computer.

Best,

Denise

Subject: [GENBOX] Need for compacting

I sometimes find on starting GenBox that it tells me it has detected an
error and compacting is required.
Also several times while running GenBox with other applications (usually
Wordperfect) my whole computer has frozen - no cursor control, no
CTRL-ALT-DEL - nothing, and the only way to get started again is a reset.
After this I get the same error message as above.
While this is not serious on its own, I also lose anything in any other
program which has not been saved, and it is impossible to predict when it
will happen.
Are these two occurrences related, and if so is there any way to stop it
happening? I do compact on a fairly regular basis but I would like to have
something a bit more systematic as the amount of compacting required seems
to vary greatly.
Request to Bill. Is it possible to build in automatic compacting when
required, or a message that it should be done?
