Ah, well.
My actual day job is user-centered design, and I would argue that things
start a lot sooner than that.
I'd start with a field study <http://www.namahn.com/method/field-studies>,
write a number of scenarios of use<http://www.namahn.com/method/scenarios-use>,
look at mental model design <http://www.namahn.com/method/mental-models> and
conceptual design <http://www.namahn.com/method/conceptual-design>, then go
on to different iterations of mock-ups <http://www.namahn.com/method/mockup>,
make a prototype <http://www.namahn.com/method/prototype>, etc.
(all links to my day job, for which blatant plugging apologies, but this is
what I do and know how to do, and I think it's pretty salient)
