Hi,
I am just a beginner when it comes to GENBOX but I think the problem being
dealt with here relates to two features of the calendar.
1. The Gregorian calendar was adopted by England and colonies in 1752. This
meant that the dates 3 - 13 September 1752 were omitted. In other words
people went to bed on Wednesday 2 September 1752 and woke the next morning
on Thursday 14 September 1752; 11 days had just vanished. Also New Year's
day was moved from its old position of 25 March to 1 January.
2. The other problem is with leap years. The years 1800 and 1900 are NOT
leap years. This must be born in mind when calculating over these
boundaries and why EXCEL etc gives errors prior to 1900.
Kind regards
Bob

Hello Listmembers,
whenever I write in the field of birth or death the date
13.03.1699, the GenBox-program change it to 13.03.1698/99.
But if I write for example 13.04.1699, then the year stays
unchanged - also if I write another century like 13.03.1799.
First I have thought, that I have checked the box
Preferences>Dates>Show since/until ..., but its not.
Is there any solution for this problem available ?
Regards, Frank

Go to View > Preferences > Dates. Untick the box that is labeled Auto
Double Dates.
This has something to do with a calendar change. I've read the explanation
many, many times in the past 13 years and still don't understand exactly
what happened. Maybe someone can explain it so both you and I can
understand.

If you trust Wikipedia, go there and look up "Gregorian calendar"
There is a pretty good and very detailed entry regarding calendars. It may
not help, but at least you may be able to accept the complexity of the
problem.
In summary, there have been many calendar changes over the centuries,
resulting in the need to make adjustments to dates. Each country accepted
the calendar changes at widely varying points in history. There were points
in time when the beginning day of a year was vastly different for individual
countries, including England.
Therefore, a researched recorded date for an historical event must be
considered in terms of location and where that location was at that time in
regard to calendar adjustments.

Just another thought - look at Cyndislist for calendar information -
http://www.cyndislist.com/calendar.htm#Old
One of the sites mentioned therein is this one which is a little simpler
read than the Wikipedia explanation-
http://www.polysyllabic.com/?q=calhistory/gregorian

Thank you,
the change of Julianic/Gregorianic calendar were accepted
in different countries and in different times between 1582
and 1700. For that its no option available to set the use
of which calendar manually, there should be a mechanism
to judge self about that (a field "country" is missing, too).
The include the coordinates for the locations seems to be
the only way to solve it, like you said. I am not convinced,
because it would be a very clever program to recognize
everything just by the coordinates, but I will try it.
Is there also anything to include in the field "date range"
for the locations ?
