Shelly,
Just finished a couple of checks dealing with the event flags. I took a
couple of events with G (General Notes for Event) checked and cut and pasted
the note to the Research Notes for Event for the same event. Genbox moved
the check mark from G to R on the Summary tab. I moved the notes back (from
research to general) and again Genbox moved the check mark from R to G
correctly. That was without having to run Check Links.
As I mentioned before, I recently moved my media folders and subfolders. As
expected, that broke the media links. The M check mark was in place on the
Summary tab, but instead of a media file showing for an event, there was a
small white box with a red X mark in place of the media image, indicating
the broken link to the media file. When I changed hard drive location of the
media folders and subfolders I also changed the Preferred Folder for Media
Files option (View > Preferences > Operation tab). Double-clicking the small
white box with the red X opened the Media Record window for the specific
media file. The File name box shows the location of that media file (for
example, "data"\Locations\SJCC_01.JPG). By changing "data" to "Pref" Genbox
uses the new location for Media Files that I established in Preferences and
the link to the media file was reestablished.
I do not know if any of that information comes even close to your situation.
I still recommend you send a compressed file of our database to Bill and
identify some of the individuals with MGRSW check marks that you have been
describing.
Best,
Denise

I really doubt that Shelly. If your assumption were accurate, I too would
have the same situation, and I don't. Also, the beta testers would have
encountered the flags being set without reason and that has not happened.
Since your tick marks, or flags, are a yes/no element of the database (for
example, is media linked to this event?), I would expect the default setting
would be no. When we add something to an event, whether linking a media,
adding a note or witness, Genbox changes that default no to a yes
(activating the tick mark display). What Genbox is apparently not
anticipating is when we remove those media, notes, or witnesses from an
event (for example, when I changed the folder and sub-folder structure of
where I stored different media, breaking the media links). However, running
the check (File > Check Links) at the time of the changes should correct the
problem.
Have you considered checking the database (opening a copy of the database in
Access to look at the contents of the tables) or sending a compressed copy
of your database to Bill with specifics as to which numbered individual to
check?
Best,
Denise

I have a backup dated September 2005. It had to update to the latest file
format when I loaded it, as I don't have an older version of Genbox on my
system.
I see the problem in the 2005 file, with some differences. In my current
file I have an individual with 12 events with eleven falsely marked as
having sources. In the older file he has 12 events with 4 falsely marked as
having sources, and the remainder correctly having no tick marks next to the
events. It's possible that those events didn't have sources to begin with as
some of my data came in from a previous software package with sources
attached to the individual identifier rather than to events.
Maybe Genbox is just adding source tick marks where it shouldn't? What do
you think?
Shelley
