As a professional developer I have volunteered to help two or three
times in the past 2 years and have not had the courtesy of a reply in
response. Even a "thanks but no thanks" would have been appreciated.

Present, but with little time for genealogy research at the moment. I
agree that open sourcing could potentially help, or pulling in paid or
unpaid developers while retaining a commercial license. (My current lack
of time for genealogy research also means I'm not able to volunteer as a
developer at the moment.)
