birth the responsibility of the parents rather than the local registrar as
it had been from 1837.
If the parents were unable to do this the responsibility then fell to the
occupier of the house where the child was born. This could be extended to
the person having charge of the child, which inferred that hospitals could
be covered by the Act.

The OED has 1779 as its earliest date of a quotation using this phrase,
so your origin is very possible. It goes on to say:
"Note. As to the origin of these nothing has been ascertained. An
obvious suggestion is that b. (for which the evidence does not go far
back) refers to the difficulty which a child beginning to read has in
distinguishing the tailed letters p and q; others have conjectured some
cryptic reference to the words peculiar, or particular."
I don't think we'll ever know for sure. :)

Does anyone happen to have access to the passenger list for the Saturnia ?
My grandfather came to Canada in March of 1923, and landed in Halifax, Nova
Scotia, from where in Scotland, I do not know.
Any suggestions or direction would be much appreciated.

Catherine Campbell was born about 1815 "in France" (according to the
1851 census). Family legend says that she was "born on the battlefield
of Waterloo" (now in Belgium, but borders were different then). She
married in Caputh, Scotland, but we don't know WHEN her family returned
from France (or if they really were with the army). Does anyone know
whether records were kept of births among the British forces on the
Continent at this time (perhaps equivalent to modern Consular returns)?
If so, where would they be?

I like Family Tree Maker (a very vocal group seem to make a career out
of hating it). Brother's Keeper and reunion also have their fans -
different packages suit different people. I suggest that you try out the
various demos - most of them have their own sites now, and see what
suits you.

I guess the follow-up to ambulance-chaser is hearse-chaser?? The advert
was spammed across all the groups - a second reason not to participate!

When I was little I remember thinking it meant "mind your Please and
than"kwews", or put simply, be polite. It wasn't until my kids were in
kindergarten learning to write, that I found myself telling them to Mind
your p's and q's.

Subject: Indexing of passenger list for NY ships 1850's
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Hi,
A couple of years ago I was in the National Archives in Washington DC
searching for someone who had emigrated from the UK to New York State. From
Census records it appears that he arrived in about 1857. However, when I
was making my search, the passenger lists covering that period had not been
indexed. Does anyone know whether ships passenger lists for this period
have since been indexed?
Regards
Steve

I am also interested in passengers of "The Alexander" which sailed from
Greenock (I think) in 1820 on its way to Quebec. This ship was owned
and I believe Captained by James Henry, of Bo'ness, who is likely my 5th
great grandfather.

Subject: MCLAREN/DUNBAR
Anyone doing MCLAREN or DUNBAR research?
I have the following listed and am trying to determine if there is a blood
relationship between them
Elizabeth McLaren DUNBAR born abt 1838 Glasgow
Catherine McLaren DUNBAR born abt 1808 Stanley, Perthshire.
Elizabeth McLaren DUNBAR born abt 1847 Glasgow, widow
Catherine appears in Barony parish LKS in the 1881 census married to Robert
DUNBAR (born ENG, a tailor ), and I am attempting to find family connections
for these two.
If anyone can offer leads or connections I would be most grateful. I do not
have
access to earlier census data at present.
Are surnamed-indexed microfische available for earlier censuses? If so, who
sells them?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Hamerden, Hastingford, Cinderhill Farms, Sussex
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Does anyone have any knowledge of the above three farms. My WHITE
ancestors seem to have been at Hamerden in Ticehurst, Sussex, with a
William around 1770, Stephen around 1800, John in the 1851 census. Richard
WHITE is listed at Hastingford Farm, Mayfield, in the Register of Voters,
June 1843 and all his children were born there but in the 1851 census he
is listed as a farmer living at Foxhole. Is this another farm? Cinderhill
Farm was the residence of my TOMPSETT ancestors. Would these have been
tenancies or did they own the farms. Although I have found a few of these
WHITES in the Ticehurst Parish Church records, Stonegate Church is also
mentioned a couple of times, as is Hadlowdown, Buxted. Are these in the
vicinity?
One last question .. I could find no record of my grandfather (Percival
Walter Shatford WHITE, b. 1875) nor his family in the Wadhurst Church
records, though he lived across the street from the church and used to do
odd jobs for the vicar. He seemed to think his mother was a Plymouth
Bretheren, though didn't remember too much in the way of a religious
upbringing other than at the church across the way. Where would I look for
Plymouth Bretheren baptisms? Were they "big" in that area around that
time? Thanks.
