Fairly simple, if you write down a simplified tree of the generations
back from the cousin and you, keeping names of the generations level,
even if their ages are not. . At the top will be a common ancestor,
great grandfather. His sons/daughters -The first generation- are
siblings; and child of these siblings will be a first cousin to the
children of the others. any children of these cousin (who are not
siblings) are second cousins to each other. But if it goes to a fifth
generation in one line and not the other, then the parents are second
cousins, but the sticking out child is a second cousin once removed.
