to those of you

new members.

There have been a lot of postings about these lately.
For General info on what is in the censuses see
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/census.html or in the back numbers of the
Global Gazette (under the heading "English & Welsh Roots") at
http://GlobalGazette.net/backtop.htm

Except for the 1881 UK census [see below] there are NO national surname
indexes to the censuses of 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891.
The 1891 for Scotland is searchable on-line at http://www.origins.net/GRO/
There are street indexes for large urban areas.
Some individuals and local societies have worked very long and hard to
produce surname indexes for their own areas. Details of these are in a
little booklet in the Gibson Guide series:
>Jeremy GIBSON & Elizabeth HAMPSON: Marriage Census and other Indexes for
>Family Historians. £3.50 GBP.
Obtainable from the Society of Genealogists
Bookshop www.sog.org.uk - apparently the 9th.edn. is about to appear.
The relevant local family history society [many have web-sites] or county
records office is usually the best place to find these local websites.

The whole of the 1881 is obtainable on a set of CDs produced by the LDS.
See www.familysearch.org. For the UK it is available by snail-mail from
their Birmingham Distribution Centre -
LDS Church Distribution Centre
399 Garretts Green Lane
Birmingham B33 0UH
with a cheque for 29.75 pounds made payable to "Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints".

The 1881 CDs are searchable by name, and not address. It is possible to
search by parish, but some London parishes had upwards of 500,000
inhabitants, so really only just feasible for look-ups by others for rural
parishes. There is an expensive Folio Viewer available which will enable
searching by any field.
There are LDS CDs for the 1851 census for Devon, Norfolk and Warwickshire.
There are CDs produced by Gordon Beavington for Southern Warwickshire,
Gloucestershire, Bristol and some adjoining parishes for 1851.See
>http://www.rootsweb.com/~cotswold/bristolcensuses.htm
> http://www.silk.net/personal/gordonb/cotswold.htm
The 1901 census for the whole UK is due to go on line on 2nd.January 2002,
with Norfolk being released in advance of this. See
http://www.pro.gov.uk/census/default.htm
