I think that the underlying point here is that the English Establishment
version of England as the home of tolerance, freedom and democracy is a
myth. Our antipodean cousins do us a service by pointing this out to those
of us who are not aware of it and those of us who already know do not
object to being reminded.

I recall an incident that I once witnessed when I was working in South
Africa. I was in a bar in Johannesburg and a young, well lubricated
Englishman was standing at the bar railing on about the sad lot of the
blackman in South Africa (this was the old South Africa). Suddenly, a
spirited Aussie voice, from the other side of the room, interjected: "We
all agree with yer, mate! Now just cut out the verbal diarrhoea!
