If you think that George did get back to England and stayed there, then I
suppose your best chance to find him would be in a census index.
.You don't say when he tried to return to England, but if it was before
1881, you could try looking at the 1881 index. and of course the 1901.
As he was a sailor he may have been out of the country again.
You could try looking at marriages and deaths to see if he eventually
remarried or died in England.
If he wanted to disappear though he may have changed his name.
As he was born in 1844, you might get some clue from looking at his parents
and siblings. If they stayed in England, then he may have returned to live
near them. Or he could have settled near the coast to continue being a
sailor.
