Sorry but I have to disagree Rod, I don't recieved any such emails
from Rootsweb yet I'm subscribed to about 12 lists and I admin 2 more.
Half of me understands the reasons for setting up a seperate British
set of lists, with better software and hopefully better
administration, however the other half is distressed at the thought
that traffic will become split across the duplicate lists, effectively
halving the amount of potential subscribers for each list. Few
'newbies' to the online genealogical community will subscribe to both
lists, even I'm not happy that I'll have to subscribe to yet more
lists because I'm having trouble as it is remembering which ones I'm
already signed up to.
One question for you though, will the admins of these lists be strict?
I ask because I already recieve lots of off topic emails which drive
me mad, ironically most of them come from two list admins who forward
on mailings from the CD-Archive list and others. Now I was once
subcribed to the CD Archive list...but many of the mailings weren't of
interest to me, I found it easier to visit the site once a month
instead. I don't want to join more lists only to recieve such off
topic emails, especially not another 4-5 forwarded copies of the same
mailings. When I say Off Topic I stress not relating to the name of
the mailing list, i.e. I'd prefer a mailing list where it was felt
necessary for every new 'national' resource or website to be announced
by an over zealous subscriber or where someone starts a discussion on
the best family tree software every month.
