It is Rootsweb policy that old mailing lists never die - they do not
rationalise or reorganise. They also allow anyone to set up a mailing list -
if I wanted to set up yet another Cornwall list I could.

In effect they fall somewhere between the anarchic world of Usenet and the
more restrictive world of these new lists.

Multiple lists for the same place usually get set up when someone objects to
the actions of an existing list admin, who is usually trying to enforce
Rootsweb Accepted User Policy - which, ironically, the rebel list owner is
also expected to enforce.

It is unfortunate that Rootsweb have adopted this approach - far better
would be a democratic means of replacing a list admin.

As many have said Rod is free to set up and offer this service, as
prospective users we are free to sign up or ignore them. Personally I will
stick with the 5 rootsweb county lists I am subscribed to - I really don't
want any more email. If any of them wither away to nothing I may
investigate the new competitor list to see if it offers any improvement.

Phil
