I much prefer your description. Joseph Chamberlain sounds to me like
the sort of fellow I would have got on with!

The difference in politics today, of course, from those times is that
while it's entertaining to have these colourful oddball mavericks
around - Dennis Skinner, George Galloway, etc - no-one would dream of
ever giving them a job in government, while in the 19th century they
did.
