Quarter Sessions are indeed a good source. They consist of two main parts:
legal and administrative.
The legal part includes criminal offences at the middle tier - between
magistrates and assizes. And was only extinguished when the crown/county
courts came in (1970s???)
The administrative part covers a multitude of matters (including a variety
of licencing matters, not just alcohol!). The QS were the county level of
administration before the advent of county councils (1880??)
The records are to be found at county record offices - indeed CROs were set
up specifically for the preservation of them plus the subsequent records of
the county council. All the other important records at CROs that we use are
actually subsiduary to this main purpose! Survival, arrangement and
cataloguing of the records does vary significantly between CROs. ...and it
is not as well used as it might be.
