I spend a few days every summer wandering round the East End researching
my family and almost any elderly [white] permanent resident you meet
claims they knew, went to school with, etc., etc. the Krays. Nobody has
actually said 'They were proper gennleman' yet but a kind of misty-eyed
reminiscence is always there. Perhaps it is an attempt to achieve
recognition by association, but I am always appalled by the way a set of
merciless thugs are recollected.
