Though I am no expert on Cockney rhyming slang, even I can
work out that a Lady Godiva is a fiver (i.e. five pounds).
However, we all know that a birth certificate in England and
Wales costs seven pounds, so may I offer a more circumspect and
convoluted theory?
Lady Godiva is famous for riding on a horse naked through the streets
of Coventry. The equally famous Dance of the Seven Veils
also culminates in nakedness. So perhaps someone has put the two
together and come up with the conclusion that a Lady Godiva equals
seven, not five.
Or is this too fanciful and unnecessarily convoluted thinking on my
part? No, don't answer that !
