An opposite case, a schoolfriend of my wife's was never allowed to wear
white ankle socks as a child because her mother disapproved. It wasn't until
the girl had grown up that she discovered that her mother, as a child, had
been incarcerated in the Theresianstadt concentration camp. This had a
section that was displayed to visiting members of the Red Cross to show the
inmates weren't being badly treated. All the young girls in the camp had to
wear white ankle socks when the visitors came.
