You should be able to find the reference on www.1837online.com. It's
a pay-per-view site but it will have the reference you are seeking.
You'll also be able to order the certificate from there as well.
FreeBMD hasn't got as far as the 1940s as yet.
Genealogy: is it a thing of the past??
