I would conclude that that was what happened. For some reason, the
marriage never took place at St Mary Islington. The length of tie
between that series of events and the later marriage, should mean that
the Banns were called again, at St Luke Old Street. You'd need the Banns
book to prove that :-)
As for the first try... I've got one set of Banns for an ancestor of
mine where the marriage never took place. Indeed, the chap went on to
marry some completely different. In this case, the Banns book was
normally annotated with the date of the marriages, but for my chap,
there was no such extra date. Any chance that other entries in your
first Banns book have been annotated in this way?
