Subject: Demographic data?
Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 13:44:02 -0600
Hi folks!
Quite some time back, I adopted the practice of estimating birth or marriage
dates in those cases where I didn't have data on one item or the other. I
just used my own 'horse-back estimate' of the usual ages at which a man or
woman marries for the first time, the age at which a woman gives birth to
her first child, the typical interval between marriage and the arrival of
the first child, and the usual intervals between that first child and any
subsequent children.
I would like to refine my estimation technique. To that end, I need to have
a look at those same items for American populations as they have varied over
the years. For instance, while two hundred years ago, marriages of girls of
fourteen and fifteen were not uncommon, they are relatively rare today.
Since estimation is based on prevailing age (I'm not entirely comfortable
saying the 'average age) at which such life events take place, some kind of
tabular data seems to be desirable. Can anybody direct me to sources for
such data.
