As far as charting is concerned we have used TreeDraw for many years.
The program will read a standard Gedcom file. Once you have generated
the main chart (descendants of X, say), the program allows you to
merge in further ancestor and descendant charts. In that way you can
build up the complete picture. Because all elements of the chart can
be moved around at will the people and relationships can be displayed
easily.
You can include photos and other graphics and place them anywhere you
wish where there is a gap large enough.
TreeDraw is available as a shareware download from the author at
www.spansoft.org and can be registered over the Internet if you decide
you like it.
