I posed almost the same question in a danish news-group.
One person gave the advice of using either the function Curves or the
function Level, while another told me to try the function Threshold.

I have tried all three but - alas - without much succes!

I am using Micrografx Picture Publisher 8 or GIMP. GIMP is freeware but
nevertheless very "function-filled"!
