Hi John

The best sample DNA medium is either blood or cheek scrapings. We use the
later, as it is non-invasive and you can collect the sample in the privacy
of your own home. Hair only yields mtDNA (no Y chromosomal material), so
for half the target population it's not the way to proceed,

If you are the son of your father, you have the same DNA as your father, so
you would be under no pressure to obtain a sample of your fathers' DNA for
posterity. On the other hand, if you wanted to get the mtDNA from your
father's mother, you can obtain that mtDNA by obtaining a sample of your
fathers DNA or if your father has a sister, who has a daughter, they would
share the same mtDNA and you would be under no pressure to obtain the sample
now.
