Subject: [DNA] Mitochondrial DNA Concordance
Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 11:11:42 EST
There is a web site which has arranged mtDNA polymorphisms (variations from
the reference sequence) in such a way that you can easily search to see if
your exact pattern (mitotype) has been reported in the technical literature.
It covers articles which analyzed population samples around the world up to
about 1998. If you find an exact match, you can see the localities where
that mitotype was found.

My mitotype 16293G was reported in 3 locations (Portugese, Basque, and
Finnish), but to the best of my belief, my most distant known matrilineal
ancestor came to the US from England in the early 1600's. That may mean that
any Portugese/Basque/Finnish ancestry would be before her time, maybe many
centuries before.
My husband's pattern didn't match anything reported in the literature. As
more and more samples are analyzed, many new mitotypes will be discovered!
