Our Stidham/Stedham/Steadham surname family association (The Timen Stiddem
Society) contracted with Family Tree DNA of Houston, Texas and I believe all
of the concerns you mention would be met by them. Their web address is:

We just sent off DNA samples to FTDNA from 11 men in our group bearing one of
the spelling variations noted above. I would have liked to have had several
more participants in our study, but most of the 80 men I contacted just
didn't seem interested enough in taking part.
