Oxford Ancestors, Freepost (SCE 9896), Oxford OX3 9YN, UK has done
sufficient(in their opinion) anayses of mitochondrial DNA in European
populations to establish seven distinct mtDNA patterns. They have given a
female name to each pattern and refer to these named patterns as the Seven
Daughters of Eve. The mutation patterns allow them to make estimates of how
long ago the original person was in Europe. The geographic distribution of
the various mutations within each pattern also permits a judgement of the
geographic origin of the mtDNA pattern in Europe and migration patterns
within Europe.

For example, my mtDNA pattern belongs to a maternal ancestor they have
designated Katrine. They pose that she lived 15000 years ago on the Southern
slopes of the alps that run down to the sea near Venice and descendants
moved up the Rhine valley to the North Sea. The "Ice Man" found in the Alps
in 1991 had Katrines mtDNA pattern.

Hope this answers your question satisfactorily. Hal Houser
