Clearly the order of preference would be 1) blood, 2) buccal swab, 3) hair.
In our experience hair is an easy and ready source but provides limited DNA.
The preservation in not the best. Also, it depends on whether the root bulb
is present or absent. Retrieving DNA from hair shafts can be very difficult
and tedious. Buccal swabs are less invasive than blood and provide a
sufficient quantity and quality of DNA. They are easily obtained and
shipped. Storage can be problematic and if the DNA is not isolated within a
certain period of time (roughly 30 days) the quantity of DNA can be greatly
diminished. It is a great way to sample and ship DNA samples. Blood is
clearly the preferable source for our purposes. It provides a high quality
and high quantity of DNA. We are able to run numerous tests for analysis
compared to buccal or hair samples. Those interested in archiving DNA
samples should consider who will be storing the sample (home kits vs storage
facility).
