Subject: [DNA] Maternal Native American ancestry
Date: Tue, 05 Dec 2000 20:29:16 -1000
Dear List,
In researching my ancestry I have come across a possible Native
American ancestor. This is based on a strong family tradition. Here is
the story. My mothers, mother claimed that her mother, my great
grandmother, was a illigitamately born of a union between a Indian and
her mother. This was before birth certificates and th eprocess of
covering this up was vary easy, My grandmother is said to have been
adopted within the family by her parents.
I have searched and searched for any documentation to support
this theory. The circumstancial evidence all points to the validy of the
family tradition but no conclusive proof and no documentation. They
covered their tracks very well.
Now I know the tribe of Native Americans that would be in all
proability the tribe of the father. I could even possibly get a blood
sample from a member of the tribe for comparison purposes. I could also
get a blood sample from my mother and myself. With this material would
it be possible using dna testing to give credence to the family
tradition. The rest of the family is all caucasian mostly german/
english descent.
If the answer is yes then on to the next step. How much would
the process cost considering that the samples would be from different
areas and have to be shipped. I would be happy with either a negative or
a positive answer.
Aloha,
William Disbro
