If it is a straight line of females or a straight line of males from the
ancestor down to your, your mtDNA or Y-chromosome tests would show the ethnic
origin in a broad geographical sense and with a certain degree of
probability, depending on what markers showed up. If the line zigzags between
males and females, you would need to find a collateral relative to represent
your ancestor's DNA.
