As many of you may know, Brigham Young University is sponcering DNA tests
and if you can get 150 people together, they will come to you and it won't
cost but maybe 10 dollars, I too have a Brown G-grandmother. Also believe to
be of Melungeon descent. I have the symptoms of one of the dieases passed
down. I live in Ohio and if we can get enough of us together, we can pick a
central location here for us all, and notify them. They will send us a copy
of their report. Let's hear from anyone in Ohio, Please? I hear the tests
are
very expensive. This way, we could get them cheaper. Wanda Brewer Shepherd

I may be speaking out of turn here, but my understanding is that BYU
sponsors
two sorts of DNA testing. In one case, they are building a research database
and will actually offer you a small fee for your sample and four-generation
pedigree chart. These are the "collection events" where BYU will travel to a
location if a sufficient number of people sign up. The goal is to get a very
diverse set of samples to search for useful new markers. You will receive no
personal reports. Several years down the road, they may have enough data and
procedures in place to offer tests with personal reports, and fees would be
charged at that point.
The other sort of DNA testing is done on a case-by-case basis for special
projects that are presented to them. I have seen references to projects on
various mailing lists, and it sounds like BYU is charging fees for this
approach since they are performing a service for you and not vice versa.
