New to this list--thanks to Ann's alertness! Our Rootsweb list (Rutledge
surname) is interested in doing a DNA study. I've heard about a couple of
places that will do the testing and results, but wonder if anyone on this
list has any pointers... I know next to nothing about biology, so please
don't get too technical on me, but from what I understand, we need male
volunteers carrying the surname to test the "Y" line for potential
genealogical matches, right? And this will show us relativity of some sort,
but not actually the Whom and When and Where, correct?

Your understanding is correct. Most of the projects we've heard about here on
this mailing list have used http://www.familytreedna.com, although
http://www.oxfordancestors and http://www.genetree.com offer similar
services. If you'll check the archives for Howery/Hauri, you'll find an
example where just two people found a connection using DNA. Also look for the
Mumma project, which is an example of what you can find if you can enlist
more volunteers.
Let us know how things go!
