Your results are one of the best examples yet for proving that spelling of
surnames is not as important as some people think. In your study I counted
six different ways to spell the name "Mumma" and still have matching Y's.
I have found spelling before about 1850 was optional, even by educated
people. Some people get so hung up on the spelling that they won't look for
similiar sounding names. The way a name sounds is more important( Example:
Isom, Isham, Axum,Axiom,Easun) unless of course the name is a translation
from another language (Ex: Kirsch and Cherry are the same German name). Then
how it sounds doesn't matter either
