I agree with much of your example, the excpetion beign the quoted part <g>.
I've been doing this kind of research myself for the past couple of years,
and it can be excruciating to follow various lines of descendants for a
couple of hundred years only to have them end with no more daughters in 1950!
Actually, I exaggerate -- it's fun, and I accumulate all kinds of records
which can be of interest to other researchers, even if I don't accomplish my
primary goal.
