Subject: [DNA] Reliability and costs of DNA testing?
Date: Sun, 4 Mar 2001 23:04:21 -0600

Greetings,

I'm a new member of the Genealogy-DNA mailing list. I have some
questions on the use of DNA testing to determine family relatedness that
I'd like to pose. I'll be most appreciative of any answers other
members can provide.

Would it be possible to determine if two lines of Allisons who lived in
the same county in New York in the 1600s and 1700s were actually
descended from the same Allison paternal line by analyzing the DNA of
one living male descendant of each line?

We have reached a "brick wall" on the paternal origins of one of the two
lines beyond 1720. The earliest known male ancestor of the other line
can be traced back to Connecticut in 1643 and his origins were English.
We think there is a good possibility that both lines were connected but
we can find no historical documents to prove that hypothesis. Could
analysis of the DNA of one living male descendant of each line determine
if both lines had a common paternal ancestry?

If DNA analysis can be used to help determine a common ancestry, does
anyone know what the likely cost might be to analyze the DNA of the two
living male descendants? Would anyone be willing to recommend specific
organizations, companies or websites that offer reliable and reasonably
priced DNA testing for genealogical purposes?

Sincerely,
Mary Allison Yonan
