You know this has been said to me quite a few times but I've been
researching Scottish records hard for the last five years and I've
found nothing to support this. What I've seen is the lord, his offspring,
and siblings playing around with the local maids and having children
by them; the male children mostly carrying the father's surname. I
am no expert but I suspect that this is the true explanation and the
latter is just a more conservative/Victorian explanation for all the
messing around that happened.
