Can't argue much with your multitudinous assessments except maybe:

" Even though poor people have tended to have more kids, they are less likely
to survive to maturity, so I think it just about balances out."

I wouldn't count on it, humans seem to be able to 'hang in there' under very
adverse circumstances.
