Subject: [DNA] question about mtDNA results
Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2001 19:16:28 EST
I just today received my mtDNA results from Oxford Ancestors, and I am from
the Helena clan, as I strongly suspected (intuition or a penchant for
gambling?).The 400-letter code that I was given has just one red letter in
it, meaning that it is the place where a mutation has occured, right? But
how would I compare these codes to another person to know if we were from the
same line?
For instance, my matrilineal ggggrandmother was Ann Patterson, and I want to
prove that Eleanor Patterson was her mother. I have a lot of evidence but no
proof. If I can find a matrilineal descendant of Eleanor and get that person
to take the mtDNA test, what will it show me if the 400 letters are all the
same? If they are, would it prove Eleanor was Ann's mother, or would it just
make that a possiblity? And if the code was different, it would prove that
Eleanor was NOT Ann's mother, right??
Any help appreciated, as there were no explanations for comparing in Oxford
Ancestors' packet. Thank you, Connee
