Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002 20:07:01 -0600

Copied over to the DNA-Genealogy list with permission. Many have expressed interest in the forth coming announcement of these test results, so I felt this would be appropriate to include here.

Subject: [Melungeon] DNA study results to be announced

Dr. Kevin Jones will speak at Fourth Union, June 20-22, 2002, about the
DNA
study he is doing to help determine the ancestry of the Melungeons. This
is
a long-awaited study and many of us have eagerly awaited the results. This
study has taken a long time because it is being done properly. It is much
better to do the job right and in accordance with accepted scientific
criteria than to turn out a quick study and have the results discredited.
We
are indeed fortunate that Dr. Jones has undertaken this work.

This study has attracted the attention of some of the top people in the
field, and I'm proud to say that I will be accompanying Dr. Jones to a
conference next month where this study will be discussed with some of
those
experts. (I'm just there to give some general background on the
Melungeons.)
NO ONE is going to be able to dismiss this study on the grounds of faulty
science.

I urge all of you, if at all possible, to attend Fourth Union, where you
will not only hear Dr. Jones present his findings, but will be able to ask
questions. This study may not answer all of the questions surrounding our
people, but it will be a giant leap forward in our understanding, and will
be a milestone in the history of the Melungeons.

Fourth Union, sponsored by the Melungeon Heritage Association, will be
held
at Memorial Park on Fort Henry Drive in Kingsport, Tennessee. Information
about special hotel rates, other activities in the area, etc. will be
posted
on these lists, and will be available on the MHA website
(www.melungeon.org <http://www.melungeon.org )
as details are worked out. If you have any questions, feel free to contact
me any I'll tell you what I know.
