One thing which is obvious:

I have spent a lot of time in Central and South America and also in the
Western United States in places like Utah.

Central American Indians look entirely different from North American
Indians. There is no similarity between them at all.

One possibility is that both have a common origin but the North American
Indians mixed in with pre-historic immigrants from Europe. North American
Indians are a lot taller and fairer than Central American Indians. This
would seem to be consistant with that theory.

Another possibility is that North American Indians got here from Alaska
whereas Central American Indians got here from Polynesia.

By the way, none of them like to be called "Indians". North Americans like
to be called Native Americans. Central Americans like to be called Indigenas.
