I can see that you had a very strong reaction to one thread on GENEALOGY-DNA.
Perhaps you will permit me an equally strong reaction to the sarcastic
overtones in your post. As list administrator, I find it offensive that you
have passed immediate judgment on the whole list based on that one thread.
I know I sound like I'm dumping on you -- perhaps I am just out of temper
because the list is not running itself as smoothly as I would wish, and I am
spending more time and emotional energy on administrative matters than I'd
like. I have devoted many hundreds of hours to this list in an effort to make
it a "constructive site," most of these hours in enjoyable and mutually
beneficial exchanges about the highly technical field of DNA testing as
applied to genealogy. Threads like this are an exception, and they diminish
but do not ruin the immense pleasure I usually take in the list. I have
reviewed this thread, which was indeed off-topic, but I see it began at
10:54am on Friday, and the originator expressed his intention to end it at
1:35pm. That was good enough for me.
However, I will give you the benefit of the doubt, as I do everyone. Perhaps
you did not keep your Welcome message. You say that "someone should make it
clear what this site is about" -- that's my job, and I did my best to explain
the purpose of the list in the Welcome message. I'm open to suggestions if I
need to clarify the purpose of the list. What you may not realize is that
subscribers are allowed to post messages without review by the list
administrator, just as yours was posted. I have neither the time nor the
desire to act as a censor -- I make the assumption that everyone who
subscribes is able and willing to follow the list guidelines until proven
otherwise.
Your Welcome message also has a link to the archives where you can review the
complete history of the list (the same URL found below my signature lines).
That should give you a more balanced picture of the topics we cover. You will
also find flare-ups, but I do attempt to place an [END OF THREAD] note within
a day or so. If a few messages can completely destroy any enjoyment and
benefits you might receive from the list, well then, so be it, but if you can
focus on the positive and contribute some constructive questions or comments
of your own, I believe you will find plenty of good information on the
subject of GENEALOGY-DNA.
