I don't think there's any way of knowing what blood type(s) the Neanderthal
had, but other primates (gorillas, chimps) have components of the ABO blood
system, so it must predate Neanderthals and humans both.

This was probably from a report in the popular press about Rosalind Harding's
work. A follow-up story in an Oxford newsletter downplays this connection.
