Dear Group;

It may well have been me that made the posting... In mine I posted a
DNA study in 3 locations, and quoted prices on genforum, but did not
quote the name of the company providing it. My instructions were that
we were wanting to perform a study with the Lovett/Lovitt/Lovick
surname, the pricing was _______ and for further information to contact
me.... (brief version)...

If it was I who stirred up the trouble - I'm sorry....

Best wishes
Sheryl Alvernaz

No, it wasn't you -- I just wanted to give project managers a "heads up"
about how messages posted on Ancestry/RootsWeb might be interpreted,
since
I've seen negative reactions in several different cases. And to clarify
a
question from Allan, it's not Ancestry which is objecting, it is
individual
readers and/or list administrators who are the self-appointed monitors
of
what constitutes commercial activity. I've even seen people who question
whether a genealogical society can include the cost in a conference
announcement. I personally don't think such an indignant posture is
warranted, and it's by no means universal, but you might avoid
alienating
some prospects if you omit the price and the name of the company you
have
chosen for your project. These details can be included on your personal
web
site.

An announcement for a new WILSON project appeared so soon after my first
post
on this topic that it must be coincidental, but you can see how Steven
Zuraff
handled the issue of "advertising:"
