Paul,
I am also new to the group and have been looking at the various services. To
date I have seen three.
1. is from http://www.familytreedna.com who have 12 and 21 marker tests.
They also maintain for life your information without charge and notify of
matches to willing parties. They keep the samples for 25 years and can
upgrade the 12 point to a 21 point. Odds are that 21 point tests will be
"upgradable" to more tests in the future. They store the sample for 25 years
in a refrigerator.. Bennett actually called me back on the phone and I was
most impressed. Perhaps experienced researches can advise us all of any
pitfalls?
Then you have the Oxford test that has ten points. Nine of the ten points
are the same as http://www.familytreedna.com and you can upgrade an Oxford
to a familytreedna 12 or 21 point test.
I have also seen geneology.com or similar name with a 23 point test, yes 23
points, they make it clear that it is a YEARLY FEE to be on their site, you
could be paying out a lot of money over a long period of time for a service
that costs them next to nothing. There is no information on storage or
upgrading or even on the sample kit. I suspect that they are using
familytreedna services at the University of Arizona also.
What I would like to do is start collecting DNA NOW and store it in my
refrigerator as older male relatives have very few years left and the
samples will then be lost.
The kits require inside cheek scrapings which tend to frighten people.
Asking for hair samples would be easier but I have yet to see any service
accept hair samples for geneology DNA purposes. Perhaps a member of this
group will educate us on which service accepts hair samples?
Regards
Roger Townsend
