<Keep in mind they are not JUST using mtDNA and/or y-chromosome DNA. We
have heard numbers such as 250 markers come over the wall. We can assume
from this that they are probably looking at additional nuclear DNA markers
from other chromosomes.>

My understanding meshes with Orin's on this point regarding the testing of
other chromosomes. I believe that BYU even intimated that while they were
not specifically testing for medical maladies, that if they did come across
some (I imagine to come across them you would have to test for them), they
would let the donor know. This is why I did not join the crowd in
submitting a sample--without privacy laws in place, I do not want my
non-y-chromosome data sitting in someone else's database, even with their
assurances. If my assumptions above are correct, I do hope, however, that
lives are saved by discovery of these maladies.

And to think that potential y-chromosome junk DNA participants turn us
project coordinators down based on privacy issues such as genetic
discrimination, fear of employer reprisals, discrimination from insurers,
et al., when we are only having tested junk DNA. As such surname projects
become more commonplace, some of these issues will diminish as people are
more educated on the issues.
